The weight and length of the Peterson Bump Hammer is within grams and millimeters of the “Tommy Hawk”. We have however designed our bump hammer without the famous sharp corners that have created so many “Tommy Hawk Thumbs.” Our narrower ergonomic handle has a textured finish that allows a better grip. Most importantly we have added Weighting Holes so that you can determine your correct hammer weight that creates the characteristics YOU desire.
We have found that handle flexibility is one of the factors to consider in bumping. In Europe some folks are using handles made from shoe leather to create the most flexible handle possible as it reduces follow through letting the key return. However, many locksmiths feel they aim better with a firmer handle, or they like the results they gain from a firmer hit. Others believe that a moderately flexible handle such as in our black hammer is the best of both worlds.
